SAN ANTONIO – Police scoured a wooded area on the North Side Wednesday afternoon, looking for two teenagers who allegedly stole a car, wrecked it and then fled the scene.

Officers responded to the accident around one p.m. at the intersection of Chambers Road and Tupelo Lane, where they found the car wrecked into the brush.

Also at the scene was 32-year-old Joe Bavo, who says the suspects in the car burglary crashed into him at Fredericksburg Road and Callaghan.

“I chased ’em down pretty good, man,” Bavo said, pointing to his now bruised sedan.

Bavo said he pursued the driver after they crashed into him. The pursuit came to an end when the driver of the stolen vehicle took the turn too quickly and almost flipped the vehicle.

“They went airborne at like a forty five degree angle,” he said. “They just sat there for ten seconds afterwards, and then they get out. The boy runs off, but the chick runs at me. Then she turns around like ‘Oh. oh, we’re running. Okay.’

“Man, if you’re gonna be a criminal, at least be a good one,” Bavo said. “I could’ve had ’em both, but I didn’t know if they had guns or something.”

An officer arrived to the scene shortly afterwards and pursued them into the wooded area. Police said the duo, who are both most likely teenagers, were found resting under a tree, but took off again when an officer found them

One helicopter unit and three K-9 units were called to the scene to assist with the search, but after about an hour, the search was called off.

Dr. Martha Mead Elementary School was placed under a modified lockdown while police looked for the teenagers, said Barry Perez, North Side ISD’s executive director of communications. The modified lockdown has since been lifted.

No one was injured in the crash, however Bavo said he had a previous neck injury from a tipsy driver who crashed into him, and that it’s very likely going to cause him ache later today.
