2016 Maxima marks the come back of Nissan’s “4-Door Sports Car”

The brand fresh two thousand sixteen Nissan Maxima is set to arrive at the two thousand fifteen Fresh York Auto Demonstrate on April 1.

Based on looks alone, the two thousand sixteen Nissan Maxima sedan is ready to create a big stir at the two thousand fifteen Fresh York Auto Display. Very first spotted during a Super Cup TV commercial, the fresh Maxima proves the Japanese automaker is not providing up on its family car with a need for speed (and attention!).

The two thousand sixteen Maxima is absolutely loaded with kinks and creases, the fender creases swoop upwards, rearwards below the door treats, and back up and over the rear wheels before tapering into the trunk. Large LED-equipped headlight and tail-lamps will give the fresh Maxima an instantly identifiable ‘face,’ even at night-time. When it comes to details, like the size of the grille, Nissan designers side-stepped a simplistic ‘bigger is better’ treatment for something that looks like a cross inbetween a GT-R supercar and the brand fresh Murano crossover.

The original Datsun Maxima was, more or less, a Z sports car with four doors. This was a courageous departure into the sport sedan segment for Datsun (which would soon adopt the Nissan name in the U.S.).

There is something special – and unnervingly odd – about matching your clothing to your Maxima. This one thousand nine hundred eighty four model is looking especially dapper in its two-town paintjob.

You have to love the wire wheels and white-wall tires on this one thousand nine hundred eighty one Datsun Maxima. They certainly don’t build ’em like they used to!

This one thousand nine hundred eighty four Nissan Maxima was targeted at now long-gone competition, such as the Toyota Cressida and VW Quantum.

Love it or hate it, you’ll never lose the fresh Maxima in a crowd! One particularly cool design feature is the black-out trim used on the car’s greenhouse, to give the impression of a ‘floating roof’ – the same basic design idea is used on the Mini Cooper.

Nissan hasn’t mentioned what will be under the fetish mask, for that news we’ll have to wait for the global debut during the Fresh York Auto Demonstrate media preview. That won’t stop us from doing a little digging and guesswork, of course.

The Maxima with the maximum appeal, this one thousand nine hundred ninety Maxima SE could modest many sport sedans wearing posh luxury labels.

The third-gen Maxima truly cemented the car’s reputation for spectacle driving in a near-luxury package.

This one thousand nine hundred ninety three Nissan Maxima doesn’t have the forms of the fresh model, but the classic version’s spectacle ethos is what the two thousand sixteen Maxima needs to emulate.

We expect the entry-level Maxima to be powered be a 300-horsepower Trio.5-liter V-6, coupled to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and front-wheel-drive. This would represent a modest 10-hp bump from the same powertrain that’s found in the current Maxima. Don’t be astonished if a sexier spectacle version, with a 350-hp Three.7-liter V-6 and all-wheel-drive, joins at the top of the range. It’s a combination we’d love to see.

It’s a refreshing turnaround from the Maxima’s slide from sport sedan to, well, a sedan with a hint of sportiness. Trust us, there’s a big difference inbetween the two.

The very first Maxima had all the forms of a phone booth (for anyone who remembers what those were), but underneath the squared-off exterior lurked pretty much the same powertrain found in the Z sports car.

The one thousand nine hundred ninety six Maxima SE soldiered on, and was now available with a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The one thousand nine hundred ninety five Nissan Maxima did away with the previous generation’s more expensive fully-independent rear suspension.

A tapering tail and quad-exhaust pipes still helped to give the two thousand four Maxima a distinctive look in the sedan segment.

By the two thousand five model year, the lines inbetween the Maxima and the Altima sedan were commencing to blur.

Recall, when the first-gen, rear-wheel-drive Maxima arrived in the early-1980s, Japanese cars were mostly known for being cheap and good for gas mileage. A Japanese sport sedan was a bold departure from a successful formula that stressed economy and reliability, not tire-chirping driving pleasure.

Subsequent generations of Maxima evolved from rear to front-wheel-drive, and the very first inline-6 gave way to a series of increasingly more powerful V-6 engines. The Maxima station-wagon – discontinured after one thousand nine hundred eighty eight – now stands out as a Nintendo-era automotive unicorn. As the years passed, more and more features – including digital instruments, power locks and windows, leather seating, and even sonar-controlled suspension – embarked appearing on the Maxima spec sheet.

The broad-shouldered looks of the current Maxima, seen here, are about to be substituted by a much more curvy and attention-grabbing form.

Nissan gave the two thousand twelve Maxima a modest cosmetic freshening.

The Three.5-liter V-6 in the two thousand nine Maxima delivered 290-horsepower, which permitted the car to sprint from 0-60 mph in less than 6.0 seconds.

The two thousand nine Maxima very first broke cover at the Fresh York Auto Showcase.

For many Maxima’istas (not a real term, but it truly should be), the ultimate iteration was the third-generation model, built from 1988-1994. The acute edges were smoothed over and, for the very first time, Nissan began officially billing the Maxima as a “4-Door Sports Car.” Nissan even affixed a “4DSC” decal on the side glass to drive the point home, so to speak.

The Maxima SE featured a 190-horsepower Trio.0-liter V-6 and spectacle goodies like a firmer suspension, broader tires, a rear spoiler, turbine-style alloy wheels, optional 5-speed manual transmission and dual-tip muffler. This was the spectacle sedan for driving fans who didn’t need (or want) a fancy badge.

Nissan hasn’t suggested any hints regarding the powertrain stashing within the fresh Maxima. We expect a 350-hp Three.7-liter V-6 and AWD will be fitted to the range-topping trim level.

When the fourth-generation Maxima arrived the writing was on the wall, however, as cost-cutting ditched the previous model’s independent rear suspension for a simpler and cheaper torsion bar solid rear axle. Generally speaking, the Maxima still held a spectacle edge over mainstream rivals from both Japanese and U.S. automakers. But that spectacle gap was closing quickly.

The fifth and sixth-generation cars can be summed as a ‘refresh’ and a ‘reboot.’ A Three.5-liter V-6 engine worked its way under the fetish mask, as did a 6-speed manual gearbox. That sounds excellent, until you realize that the Maxima’s own worst enemy was abruptly hiding within the Nissan family tree.

As the Maxima began to plateau, the Altima sedan began nipping at its high-heeled shoes in terms of content and powertrain choices. Once only available as a 4-cylinder (and sized a noticeable step below the Maxima), the Altima all of a sudden collective the same chassis and Trio.5-liter V-6 of its thicker brother.

Strange marketing gimmicks, like the sixth-gen Maxima’s “Skyview” immobile glass roof panel, further blurred the car’s pic. Was this a sport sedan, or simply an Altima loaded to the gills with options?

The fresh Maxima should wiggle off the uber-Altima pic and, hopefully, suggest a powertrain that’s set apart from what you can find in Nissan’s more middle-of-the-road sedan offerings. We don’t expect the comeback of a manual gearbox – or digital instruments and talking dashboards – but a Maxima with more daring design, a punchier powertrain, and quicker responses would go a long way towards restoring the picture of the brand’s “4DSC.”
