Austin carjacking suspect caught after crashing in San Marcos
AUSTIN (KXAN) – A carjacking suspect who, police said, fired a gun while committing the crime was caught after a pursue.
According to Austin police, their call began around Trio:11 a.m. at the Exxon Mobil located at six thousand five hundred six Decker Lane.
The victim told police that someone began following them in a truck while they were driving southbound on the US-183 frontage road from Highway 290, going as far as speeding through lights and making exact turns they had been making. Eventually, the driver lost the truck.
When they arrived at the intersection of Decker and Loyola Lane, they noticed the truck that had been following them was now in front of them and two studs had gotten out of it.
Carl Eugene Cleveland (Austin Police Department)
One of the guys, who had a gun, fired four shots at the victim’s vehicle and told them to get out of the car and run. The victim did and the fellows drove off, one in each vehicle.
Police gave pursue around Trio:38 a.m. after locating the victim’s Oldsmobile in the eight thousand one hundred block of South IH-35 near Slaughter Lane. The pursue ended at Three:49 a.m. when the suspect crashed and ran away near Exit two hundred eight at Yarrington Road in San Marcos.
The driver, identified as Carl Cleveland, 24, ran but was found by a police K9.
Cleveland told police the other suspect had originally spotted the victim driving and had dreamed their car. He claimed the other suspect did the shooting, but he had a gun at the scene because he thought the victim was shooting at them.
Cleveland is charged with several crimes, including Aggravated Robbery. He is presently in the Travis County Jail with a combined $220,000 bond.
It’s unknown if the 2nd suspect has been apprehended.
