‘Donnie was a special person’
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — A Hibbing native and well-known car dealer died as the result of the motorcycle he was driving being struck by a car at Two:02 p.m. Tuesday in the intersection of Highway thirty seven and County Road seven in Clinton Township.
Donald O. Hilligoss II, 60, of Cohasset, was traveling westbound on Highway thirty seven on a two thousand seven Harley Davidson Touring Street Slip when a two thousand eleven Hyundai Sonata being driven eastbound on Highway thirty seven by Niomi C. Boulanger, Nineteen, of Eveleth, turned left in front of him in an attempt to go northbound on County Road 7, according to a Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) report.
Hilligoss was airlifted to St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth for life-threatening injuries and later died. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of influence, according to the report.
Boulanger was not injured. She was wearing a seatbelt and an airbag deployed in her car.
Alcohol was not involved and road conditions were dry at the time, according to the report.
Hilligoss leaves behind his wifey of thirty seven years, Cindy, and three children: Hillary Ross, Sarah Hilligoss-Moe and Charlie Hilligoss.
“Don was very caring and wished only the best for his family,” Sarah said. “Don had a joyful life that was much too brief. He was deeply loved by his family, and all three of his children looked up to him. He was always encouraging, positive, kind and discreet.”
His father, Don Hilligoss of Hibbing, said he misses his son very deeply.
“Donnie was a special person, a faithful son and my best friend,” he said. “He was always dependable. He never complained. He was loved by everyone. I will miss him terribly.”
Hilligoss II was holder of Ranger GM in Hibbing, Grand Rapids GM and Mike Motors of Minnesota, and part-owner of Ford of Hibbing.
“He was the hardest working businessman,” said Hilligoss. “He put in sixty to seventy hours per week on average, and was supported by one hundred sixty employees at his four dealerships.”
Hilligoss II was a past president of the Rotary Club of Hibbing and the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota. He was also active at St. James Episcopal Church in Hibbing.
“He was even an amazing skier, often demonstrating up his children and surviving an avalanche several years ago,” Hilligoss said. “Donnie was also an avid runner, having ended over thirty marathons and fifty half-marathons across world.”
MSP Public Information Officer Sgt. Neil Dickenson said Wednesday the incident is under investigation. Charges are pending, he added.
“I will know more about the cause or contributing factors in this crash when the investigation is accomplish,” he said.
The volume of traffic at the time of the crash is unknown. Dickenson also noted that a helmet is always a safer option than no helmet.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
A memorial service for Hilligoss II will be held Saturday, Sept. 9, in Hibbing.
