2016 Detroit Auto Demonstrate: sixteen most significant cars and concepts – NY Daily News

2016 Detroit Auto Display: Sweet sixteen, the sixteen most significant cars and trucks in the Motor City!

The two thousand sixteen Detroit Auto Showcase remains one of world’s premiere gatherings of hot fresh sheet-metal and concept cars. It also happens to be the very first stop in a frantically busy auto showcase season that includes layovers in Chicago, Geneva, Beijing, Fresh York, Paris, Frankfurt, Los Angeles and, well, back in Detroit once January two thousand seventeen rolls around.

This year, the sky is the limit when it comes to the multiplicity of fresh cars and concept vehicles. Chevy is going electrical with the production version of the Bolt EV, Chrysler is reinventing the minivan (again), while BMW and Porsche have turbocharged spectacle monsters at the ready.

The BMW M2 could rival the spectacle of its fatter brothers, the BMW M3 sedan and M4 coupe.

BMW M2 Coupe

The 365-horsepower M2 Coupe represents everything we love about BMW. Lithe and lean, this rear-wheel-drive rocket is motivated by a twin-turbocharged, inline-6 cylinder engine coupled to your choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

The Scion C-HR concept made its very first appearance last year, at the two thousand fifteen L.A. Auto Showcase.

Scion C-HR

Scion is getting its very first SUV. The C-HR has worn both Toyota and Scion badges during previous auto display appearances around the world. But Scion is getting the glory – and the potential sales boon – in the Motor City. Powered by a 4-cylinder and with a choice of front- or all-wheel-drive, the C-HR cashes in on the market surge for smaller, budget-conscious crossovers and SUVs.

Recall the Chrysler 700C Concept? Exposed way back in 2012, this almost forgotten minivan concept could hint at the next Chrysler Town & Country.

Chrysler Town & Country

Minivans aren’t dead; they’ve just been overlooked by the brand that invented them. Chrysler is eventually revamping the Town & Country minivan, providing this family-friendly conveyance a broad range of gas and hybrid powertrains, along with an all-wheel-drive option for anyone living in snowy climates (like Detroit!).

Honda has shown only this one teaser photo of the all-new Ridgeline. To our eyes, the fresh model is going to have a boxier, more pickup-like exterior.

Honda Ridgeline

Here’s a name we didn’t think we’d see again. The very first Ridgeline was a popular truck-meets-crossover, tho’ the styling always struck us as being…well, weird. Look for the next Ridgeline to feature a boxier assets, positioning it closer to outright pickups rather than cutesy crossovers.

The fresh Genesis G90, seen here, is the very first model of Hyundai’s fresh Genesis luxury brand.

Genesis G90

We’ve been telling it for years; Hyundai needs its own luxury division. That day has eventually arrived, courtesy of the large and luxurious G90 sedan. This four-door cruiser is the very first of many Genesis-branded cars and SUVs. Will buyers consider this South Korean upstart as a viable alternative to powerhouse brands from Germany, Japan, and the U.S.? Detroit will suggest a big hint of things to come.

The current Ford Fusion, pictured here, is getting a makeover to keep it competitive against rivals like the Accord, Camry, Sonata and Malibu.

Ford Fusion

Ford’s midsize sedan is due an update, even if the Aston Martin-like front end still packs slew of curb-side appeal. Rivals like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry don’t stand still for long, so expect Ford to suggest slew of fuel-sipping engines, along with a plug-in hybrid variant. Most importantly, Ford’s oft-criticized infotainment system should get a massive overhaul to make it simpler to use.

The production version of the Lincoln Continental Concept, pictured here, is expected to be one of the highlights of the Detroit Auto Display.

Lincoln Continental

Big, bad, and very blue! The Lincoln Continental Concept wowed crowds via two thousand fifteen and, here in Detroit, we’re watching the production version in all its glory. A twin-turbo V-6 engine and tons of road presence could mark the Continental as being the car that makes good on the Lincoln brand’s promised renaissance.

The NY Daily News Autos team was one of the very first in the world to drive a prototype of the upcoming two thousand seventeen Mercedes-Benz E-class.

Mercedes E-Class Sedan

Mercedes-Benz is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to loading the two thousand seventeen E-Class Sedan with power and tech. Autonomous drive functions, diesel engines, very advanced dashboards and a twin-turbo V-8 are just a few of the highlights coming to this iconic German luxury sedan.

The S90 sedan is Volvo’s next take at reinventing its entire range of vehicles.

Volvo S90

The XC90 crossover has earned rave reviews, so now it’s up to the Swedish brand’s S90 sedan to keep the good vibes going. Elegant design, Volvo’s suite of City Safety features, and an optional 316-hp 4-cylinder engine that’s both turbo- and supercharged ensure that Volvo isn’t going away like dearly departed Saab. And thank goodness for that!

The fresh Porsche nine hundred eleven Turbo has a top speed of two hundred five mph.

Porsche nine hundred eleven Turbo

Power, power, and MORE power. The all-wheel-drive Porsche nine hundred eleven Turbo is mind-crushingly quick, yet it won’t attempt to kill you (much) if the weather doesn’t want to cooperate. A top speed in excess of two hundred mph is made possible by the twin-turbo, flat-6 cylinder engine mounted at the rear of the car. The sprint from zero to sixty mph takes only Two.8 seconds.

The QX60 is Infiniti’s most popular SUV, so the fresh model takes a very careful treatment in terms of updates and exterior switches.

Infiniti QX60

Infiniti is revamping its best selling SUV in time for Detroit. The company’s fresh twin-turbo V-6 is being kept in the Q50 sedan, tho’ the QX60 does benefit from crisper styling, including fresh head- and tail-lights, along with an upgraded cabin. Like Lincoln and Hyundai’s Genesis, Infiniti is a luxury brand on the budge in the Motor City.

Shown last year in Tokyo, the LF-FC concept was a hydrogen fuel cell-powered sedan that could suggest a hint at the form of the brand’s upcoming LC500 sport coupe.

Lexus LC500

Lexus is being coy, but we’re certain Toyota’s luxury division has something big planned. Possibly drawing inspiration from the LF-FC Concept shown at the two thousand fifteen Tokyo Motor Showcase, this V-8-powered spectacle coupe should have around 500-hp and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

In China, the Envision is powered by a Two.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. U.S. models will likely use the same motor, while suggesting a choice of front- or all-wheel-drive.

Buick Envision

Buick is a indeed big deal in China – it’s one of the country’s most popular car brands – so it was only a matter of time before a Chinese-built Buick headed stateside. Built in Shandong province, the Envision is a midsize SUV that blends inoffensive styling with Buick’s penchant for building whisper-quiet cabins.

The SLC substitutes the outgoing SLK in the Mercedes-Benz lineup.

Mercedes-Benz SLC300

Mercedes has axed the SLK name, substituting it with the SLC you’ll see in Detroit. The base SLC300 comes with a 241-hp 4-cylinder, but we’re pining for the big daddy twin-turbo V-6 in the AMG-tuned SLC43. With 362-hp, this little Mercedes roadster only needs Four.6 seconds for the 0-60 mph sprint.

The teaser photo of the Acura Precision Concept shows up to showcase a low-slung sedan that mimics the four-door-coupe format seen on various BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz models.

Acura Precision Concept

Acura is providing a strong hint as to its future design direction with the Precision Concept. The teaser picture looks to be a long sedan, with a low and swept-back greenhouse, along with aggressively flared rear fenders. A slinky four-door coupe, perhaps? Or could it be the rebirth of a Legend? (Please Acura, bring back actual names, especially that one!)

The Chevrolet Bolt Concept, seen here, will make its production-ready debut at the two thousand sixteen North American International Auto Showcase, held in Detroit.

Chevrolet Bolt

Chevy is thinking puny when it comes to going green. The electric-powered Bolt will be noticeably smaller and less expensive than the American brand’s current Volt hybrid. Driving range is expected to be around two hundred miles a charge, while the Bolt’s price should fall around $30,000.
